The older I get, the more I realize how incredibly naive I can be. I know a bit about computers, software, etc. (just enough to be dangerous), but I didn't have any idea that those nifty software programs that display ads (so that you don't have to pay for them) install a little EXTRA on your PC: Programming is slipped into your computer to "phone home" and contact the software's publisher's base for whatever purpose the publisher desires. Basically, through their software, they're spying on us!
Hey, I'm not a bad person. I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be, but I resent the daylights out of someone "pulling one over on me", not to mention messing with MY PC. Enter OptOut.
OptOut was designed to notify you whenever known spyware enters your computer and give you the option to remove it. Naturally, whatever piece of software came with the advertising/spyware won't be functional anymore, but at least it won't be spilling its guts.
The first time I downloaded and ran OptOut I was shocked to find that there were 39 files on my computer that were known spyware, and moreover, that all these 39 files had been active that same day!! (Phoning home and carrying whatever information they were sent to gather). Needless to say, my computer no longer has these 39 files installed, but it DOES have OptOut sitting on desktop!
Who says Big Brother ISN'T watching?! Run, don't walk, over to www.grc.com and download OptOut today ... It's free for now, until the new rewrite comes out sometime next spring.
