In playing Island Hopper, I am reminded of an old yet undying PC classic called Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I can't help but notice that almost every detail of this game is strikingly similar to Raptor, with three episodes, multiple enemies and buildings to destroy, unlimited ammo and missiles that rapidly fire, and even a similar pattern of powerups that certain enemies release when they are destroyed.
I think that it is great that a game like Raptor is being brought back to live by PLBM, but Island Hopper really, really needs sound. For such a game, I'm not even talking about classic PC speaker sounds, I mean real digital sounds that go through your sound card and come out through your speaker system.
Island Hopper is a nicely detailed portrayal of the Raptor world, and the graphics certainly do the classic justice, however the graphics for Raptor were better. For this review, I went back in time and dug out my old Raptor: Call of the Shadows CD ($9.99 at Toys R Us, years back) and played the game. The stunning detail that was put into Raptor is incredible and definitely worth a play if you've never seen it. The odds are, however, that if you haven't played Raptor yet, that you never will. (but of course, I can send you a CD with the shareware version on
promo@reviewcenter.com So for all of you Raptor-deprived people out there, here you have a chance to play the silent version as Island Hopper by PLBM Games. The shareware (like in Raptor) allows you to play the first episode, after that, registration is $14.95 for the other two episodes.
