This is a really cool product. What it does is new to Windows users, but has been very popular with Linux users for eons. What it does (straight from their FAQ) is "opens each file and then fills each byte with random junk. It then overwrites the file 10 times for maximum security." Why would you want to do this? When windows "deletes" a file all it does is erase all references to it, but it is still on your hard drive. This makes it very possible to recover (for good or bad purposes) all or most of the file. Those of you who lived thru the DOS era will remember a tool called undelete, this is exactly what it did, recover the file from your hard drive.
The entire process of getting and installing this wonderfully cool piece of software took less than 10 minutes. The download was small, about 600k (no bloatware there), and then I just double clicked and went thru the install process. No reboot necessary (although they do recommand rebooting after a shredding session so that none of the file is left in your swap file). I then ran the software and nuked a file on my desktop by dragging and dropping it onto the application. I don't have my DOS stuff installed anymore so I couldn't try out undelete, but I did boot into Linux and looked around for remainders of the file, and I didn't see any of that file (it happened to be a copy of another file, I didn't have anything that needed to be deleted really good)
Since this is only a trial you can only use it 10 times, but that is more than enough for you to see its usefulness.
