I've tested several programs which free Random Access Memory (or "RAM"). FreeRAM is a good, solid, easy to use program with a clean user interface at a very reasonable price.

After you install FreeRAM, it gives you the option of running it immediately. It appears as a black icon strange looking little fellow) in your taskbar. I asked it to "optimize" my RAM. This computer has 128 MB of RAM installed -- and FreeRAM set my target free RAM level at 76 MB. It automatically recovers RAM when available memory reaches 50% (or 64 MB on my computer). When FreeRAM is working the icon turns red.

Having a program like FreeRAM installed is a great idea if you have frequent problems with cursor locks, out of memory alerts, and other low memory problems. You can try FreeRAM for 30 days. The trial version is fully functional, with the exception that it will not save settings between sessions. I really like FreeRAM's no-nonsense approach. Give it a try!
