Well now there is actually a freeware Whois program that does it all! Not only can you just find out if a domain is registered, you can get detailed registration data. 

Plus the other BIG thing this program does is it will take a keyword and check and see what different combinations are registered and which aren't. 

And hey that isn't all. This baby is configurable in many different ways. You can produce reports, load a whole bunch of domains in to check and other option.
