The first ever review I did was of Webscripter, which I have
used ever since as my main HTML editor. The bad news is that Webscripter is no
longer in production but the good news is that it has been replaced with Basic
Web Editor.
Don't let the name mislead you, this is anything but basic, this is a very
powerful tool but easy enough to use no matter what stage of proficiency you are
at in HTML, beginner to expert. What this isn't is a web site creator loaded
with fancy tools that create bells and whistles or claim to be WYSIWYG. This is
a good old fashioned code maker and by that I mean proper code that produces
good robust fast loading sites. There are wizards for projects, tables, forms
and documents but these are comprehensive wizards that allow you to set many
attributes making your code more robust. There is also a dropdown list of every
current HTML tag which you can insert at the click of a mouse button and there
is the same for ASCII characters.
I do like the "Tag editor", right click within an HTML tag and up pops a box
where you can add, remove or adjust every HTML attribute associated with that
tag just by selection. Other features include style tag insertion, ability to
import style sheets, ability to edit Javascript, color picker, image viewer and
find and replace facility which is very labor saving for changing code
throughout a site. There is more but space here limits me to what I can add,
just go to http://www.codegeneration.com/bwe.html for a full list of features.
Webscripter is dead, long live Basic Web Editor! Incredible value for money.
