First of all let me make two thing perfectly clear, first I am always leery of a
product with Free in it's product name and registry fix programs mostly scare
the bejesus out of me because of the potential harm that they can cause.
So before testing Free Registry Fix I created a restore point.
When you first start Free Registry Fix you get this Introduction:
If you wish to receive the latest version of this software, then please
agree to check for live updates.
Free Registry Fix is the World's only FREE Registry Cleaning software on the
market today. You can safely clean and repair Windows registry problems with
a few simple clicks and enjoy a cleaner and more efficient PC.
The Registry is the nerve center of your PC and problems with the Windows
registry are a common cause of Windows crashes and error messages. FREE
Registry Fix will guarantee that you eliminate errors in the nerve center of
your PC.
A daily scan to clean your registry will make sure your system will be more
stable and help Windows and your software run faster.
Free Registry Fix uses high-performance Registry conflict identification
algorithms to rapidly identify problems in the Windows registry. These
problems can occur for many reasons including uninstalling software with
poor un-installation routines, improperly deleting files and orphaned
startup programs.
Click Next and run FREE Registry Fix to find and fix your PC Problems
Absolutely FREE.
Enjoy a better, cleaner, problem - free PC with a daily pre-scheduled scans
from this powerful software.
I clicked next without picking any scheduling option.
Later ZoneAlarm gave me this alert:
LiveUpdate is trying to set 'Promosoft
LiveUpdate: Recovery Startup' to run each time your computer is started
Application: liveupd.exe
And a Access Internet Alert came also. I denied on both.
Then Free Registry Fix went to work scanning my computer. Whenever it found "A
Problem" it makes a very irritating sound. so I muted my sound.
After about 5 minutes it said that it had found 471 problems on my computer
Then:
Free Registry Fix can automatically remove registry problems and this version
is limited to fix 50 problems absolutely FREE of charge. Should you have more
problems you will need to upgrade to the total fixer solution guaranteed to fix
an unlimited number of problems. Would you like to proceed and Fix the problems
in one click?
Then:
Warning
Free Registry Fix has automatically fixed 50 registry
problems on this PC. You still have 421 problems left on
this PC and you are strongly advised to upgrade to the
unlimited fixer version to prevent the possibility of your PC
crashing and you losing critical data.
With an "Upgrade Now" button.
However there is no Button that you can choose to pick to "Not Upgrade" Well it
was either do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and try to shut it down that way or click the
Upgrade Now button, so after some hesitation I clicked on the "Upgrade Now"
button. Luckily or unluckily it then went to a sales pitch Window and not a give
us your credit card now Window.
In conclusion I think that this type of marketing sucks. It uses misleading
terms from the get-go even in it's name. It uses scare tactics to try to get you
to spend money, including identifying many registry problems as more critical
than they are. (Running System Mechanics Registry Fix found 1 problem) It tries
to run at Startup and access the Internet without asking for permission.
Though to be fair at the bottom of their webpage they do say:
Download Free Registry Fix, the World's most comprehensive Windows registry
cleaner and fix 50 Windows registry problems for absolutely FREE!
I uninstalled it.
