The installation of Direct Access is easy and intuitive. You can place the program files where you want them. Also Direct Access politely asks if you want Desktop, and Quick Launch icons and if you want it to run at startup. It is at this p[oint that you are told by the install process that you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installed on your computer, and if you don't the program will connect you to a place to download it. You should know that if you do not have it the download is fairly hefty, it is 23 Mb,. But if you have a broadband connection, who cares?

When Direct Access starts you are informed that you have 30 days to try out a full version of the program. Fair enough.

The first time run Direct Access you are given the opportunity to do a brief tutorial. I took the opportunity and I recommend that you do too.

So here is the deal. Instead of you having to plow through complex menus or burrow into deeply nested folders to open a frequently used document you can just let Direct Access do the heavy lifting for you. Here is an example: On my Desktop I have a program called MaxiVista,I have decided that I want Direct Access to speed up my running of that program, so I drag the MaxiVista icon that is on my Desktop to the Direct Access icon that now sits in the lower right hand corner of my Desktop. Then a dialog opens in Direct Access that confirms I want to use Direct Access to open it and shows me the typing shortcut that Direct Access has picked out for me. In this case it is maxivi. So now anytime i want to run MaxiVista, anywhere I'm at, inside an application, inside a document, I just type maxivi and a tooltip comes up that informs me that Direct Access is paying attention and if I really want MaxiVista to open press F1.

Now that is just an example of an application, you can also use Direct Access to open webpages, plus it will also insert boilerplate text that you have saved tool. The possibilities for saying you time and effort are endless. This is one of those applications that you will find yourself saying, "boy i wish I had started using this earlier".

In conclusion, run don't walk to the Direct Access site and start using it. You will thank me everyday.
