The installation of Gmail Notifier is easy and intuitive, you can place the program files where you want them.

Gmail Notifier is a small tool that sits in your System Tray. What is does is notify you when new mail has reached your Gmail Inbox. It does that by changing color from a grayed-out blue to a bright blue. When you click on it your Gmail Inbox opens. That's it!

I find it reall useful. It by default runs on Startup.
