The installation of SmartFolio is easy and intuitive, you can place the program files where you want them.

When you first open SmartFolio you are told that you have 29 days left to run the evaluation version, fair enough.

Okay if you are going to shell out $599 for software I think that you will really want to use it effectively. With that in mind I think that there are two things that you should do. The first one is doing the "Getting started with SmartFolio", after all if you want to get the most out of a tool it is best to know how to use it. The other is to look at the included Pdf file Theoretical Background.

One of the first things that you are going to find out is that there are four ways that you can import data into SmartFolio. They are from Yahoo! Finance, Bloomberg Professional, Excel or text files.

Besides just keeping track of your assets, what you really want to use SmartFolio for is portfolio optimization. SmartFolio has walk-forward optimization. With walk-forward optimization the whole historical period available is divided in series of in-sample and out-of-sample segments. In-sample intervals are used for optimization, while corresponding out-of-sample intervals are used for performance evaluation. In this way dynamically re optimized portfolio is evaluated based on how well it performs on the test data, not the data it was optimized on. With SmartFolio you can also do In-sample optimization plus construct the efficient frontier, which represents a set of optimal portfolios corresponding to the entire spectrum of an investor's risk profiles.

With SmartFolio you can analyse portfolio risks using the Value-at-Risk methodology (VaR).

With this new version of SmartFolio you can use the Black-Litterman mathematical model for portfolio allocation too.

All in all SmartFolio has an excellent set of tools that the savvy trader can use to optimize their investing strategy. Highly recommended.
