A long time ago, when people didn't have a Pentium but a Apple ][e to play games, first-person perspective RPGs were somewhat simpler: for example, in most of the "Wizardry" games, you had to create a party and just descend a dungeon hacking and slashing to reach your objectives. We could suppose that the first-person-with-90-degree-turns perspective games had evolved a lot since then. "Ancients I: Deathwatch" makes us conclude that some of them haven't. "Ancients" is, in many aspects, a simple game, in which you create a party of 4 characters to save a fairy from the depths of the city. The city itself isn't that big, with only five houses available (Inn, Shop, Casino, Temple & Guild), so most of the game is spent in the sewers, where monsters like to pop up (there is no "approaching" animation, they just pop up) now and then to attack the party. The combat system is not real-time, so you can take your time either to carefully choose your moves or to get bored. The sewer levels are small and somewhat uneventful, except for some moments with some "tension", like when you find the Tomb of Relnor or the Knight who defeated Death. When registering, EPIC sends you a disk with some bonus games and "Ancients 2", which doesn't seem to be too different from "Ancients", judging from the information provided with the latter: it seems to have the same uninspiring graphics but hopefully it has sound, which "Ancients" hasn't. CONCLUSION: If you like first-person RPGs, it can't harm you to download "Ancients", but "Yendorian Tales Chapter 2" is a much better choice.
