Hi ho and a bottle of rum! With a name like Arrrggh!, I was expecting a
real swashbuckling adventure with pirate ships and bloodthirsty ruffians, buried treasure
and Spanish queens.
The opening page graphics were far more impressive than the actual game graphics, which
were almost board-like in nature. The strategy game reminds me of Risk: you play against
up to five other players to conquer islands in a preset territory. It has added elements
that are akin to Dungeon and Dragon: you can find magic scrolls which give you an
advantage over the other players, in the form of magical spells, natural disasters and
calamities that can befall your competitors, or windfalls for you.
The help file and the walk through tutorial is excellent. I did get one error (subscript
out of range) which crashed the program, but I couldn't figure out exactly what it was I
did to cause or to duplicate this event. While the actual play is somewhat slow and
awkward, as each game unfolds, its uniqueness and uncertainty of the outcome is addictive.
Overall, I found it an interesting, albeit tedious game to play. Though rudimentary, I
liked the ocean and other sound effects.
The demo version is crippled you get a limited number of available species for your human
and computer players and only one map zone to play in. However, it's plenty to see if you
like the game and want to buy it. The game is definitely one for the strategy player, not
for your average arcade mutt!
