As I have found with many of the games Apogee puts out, Death Rally is definitely a winner. Racing with a top-down perspective, you start out putting along in a VW Bug (with baloney-skin bald tires) against three opponents. The fun part is, ya got guns. So does the opposition. If you make it through the first race (it isn't as easy as it sounds... you have to place at least 3rd to collect any cash or points), you get the opportunity to fix your vehicle, and upgrade tires, armor and engine, providing you have the cash. When you have enough money, you'll also be able to trade your old car in for a better one. And speaking of money, if you have any to spare you can visit the Underground Market (heh-heh... a little sabotage never hurts...).

There are 19 other drivers (including Duke Nukem!) on the roster that you can sign up to race against in an easy, medium, or hard race. You start out at 20th place. By placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a race you gain points to move you up the list. When you reach the #1 spot, you get to race against "The Adversary" to win the game. Not possible in the shareware version, since you can only get 2 out of the 5 vehicle upgrades which makes it difficult to even finish a race without getting lapped.

I was very impressed with the game play itself. When you're skidding along in your VW with the bald tires, it drives just that way! Each vehicle and upgrade handles differently. Just like real life, folks! The shareware version of Death Rally offers 6 different tracks, nice sound and graphics, and a lot of competition. If you order the CD, you get 13 more tracks, 3 more car upgrades (including the awesome Deliverator.. nice guns...) and some of the best animated cinematics I've ever seen in a PC game.

I highly recommend Death Rally. Download this one!
