They said scrollers were no good. Obsolete. Only
for those bygone Nintendo sets. This is a
scroller - and they'll soon be eating their words, if they
haven't already. There's some thin
political story behind this one, just to explain why the player
has to go about shooting down
everything he sees (amongst other things); it's a little stronger
than Doom or Quake's
storyline, and I'll bet some of you didn't even read that little
paragraph in the text files.
The story gives some, if little meaning to the action (but who
ever needed a reason to shoot
everything in sight in a game?), stringing the various scenarios
together logically. IN A
NUTSHELL of course, this is a scroller with
enhancements.
The first scroller recently produced that was worth anything was
Raptor (Apogee), a top-down
scroller. Crack dot Com soon followed suit with its side-scroller
Abuse, adding an innovative
targetting system, where the player uses a mouse to aim. Enter
FireFight. 360° scrolling,
unlike Raptor which used forward only. Over here the targetting
system is a lot more meaningful
that Abuse's: an aiming system independent of movement, since
enemies may come on all sides,
instead of the former's two sides, just a little bit higher or
lower. However you'll need to
have a lot of mindpower to steer clear of the missiles with one
hand, and aim with the other.
There's always the option of the traditional
point-your-nose-and-shoot system, where only the
keyboard or joystick is used, with no independent aiming. However
since this is a multiplayer
game also, mouse-users will be at an advantage, assuming they can
maintain both systems
properly at once. This game, in the scroller's genre, is
remarkable in every way. But don't
take it from me. Download it for yourself.
