Folder Guard is a software-only security solution for personal or publicly
accessible computers running the Windows 95 operating system. It offers different security
levels for each different user of the computer, is highly configurable, and can block
access totally to any number of disks or folders that you want. (Which does not mean that
the disks/folders are simply hidden from view, like some other security programs.)
The program in effect offers many of the security feature of Windows NT in one program,
but one shortcoming is that it is quite difficult to understand. If you have many users of
one computer however, and you are willing to read the help files thoroughly, then it
certainly proves it's worth. You can set up just one "Default" user, and another
"Administrator". Any new users that login will be assigned the
"Default" permissions, meaning less worry for Teachers, or those people who work
in that sort of an environment.
Another plus is that the logon box that greets the users when Windows 95 is started can be
altered, so that the "Cancel" button can be disabled, and that no new user
accounts can be created without a password. There is an annoying registration reminder
that forces the user to click OK every 5 minutes, and if the computer crashes without
being properly shut down then there is a risk of files being locked out, even to the
Administrator.
