This program is a shining example of the mostly
unheralded work done by the selfless people
who produce and distribute Freeware. Bruce Guthrie is a good
example of these people. He
produces, AV, BFIND, COPSINCE, DATES, DIRCOMP, DIRTOTAL, EUMAIL,
FILL, FIXTEXT, FORTUNE, HTMSTRIP, PAGINATE, READINIT, TXTABLE
CHANGE, CONVERT, FILUPDAT, READ, and READY. All
at his own expense.
Here is what (from the well documented .doc file) Paginate does:
The PAGINATE.EXE program
formats text files containing embedded "marker"
commands. Specifically, the program can
be used to:
* Align, justify, center text
* Add headers and footers to pages
* Add page breaks
* Control indentation
* Control spacing
* Sort the file (alphabetically, not numerically all that well)
in either ascending or descending order.
* Generate indexes
* Select fields to print
* Print out dBase and ASCII-delimited files in tabular forms
* Bring ASCII-delimited and dBase files into existing text
* Translate characters
I use it to do only one thing, that is to format the reviews for
these pages. As you can imagine the 70 + reviewers for
SharewareJunkies.com send in their reviews in all different line
lengths. Using Paginate, in a few key strokes the reviews are
made to conform to the exact line length I need.
Before I discovered Paginate this was a real hassle, now, nothing
to it. I also had occasion
to contact the author, Bruce Guthrie, he responded in a matter of
hours.
I am not too sure how we can show our appreciation to these
people, after all, I can't tell you
to go out and buy a bunch of Freeware. How about take a Freeware
Author to lunch?
