Besides death and taxes there is at least one
certainty in our lives, particularly as it applies to our
attempts to find information on the Internet, all search engines
are not created equal! How many times have you chosen a search
engine, keyed in your query, then waded through page after page
of links that just didn't cut it. Then on to another search
engine and hopefully before you have aged greatly you may find
what you are after.
Solway's Internet Search increases your odds of finding your
information much more quickly. It does this by searching multiple
engines at once and showing search results in their own distinct
frame. A word of explanation is in order here. As you can see
from the above screen shot, this program can actually query 11
search engines at the same time. But be aware that to do this it
would load each search result in it's own browser window. The
author suggests that for best results you should restrict your
search to any 4 engines at a given time. I found this method does
indeed produce a good mix of presented possibilities.
If you choose 4 or less engines you can also decide how you want
the frames to be positioned, in a grid format, in rows, or in
columns. On a personal basis I like the rows format but the grid
certainly looks interesting as each resulting search is loaded
into it's own little window. Regardless of which format you
choose you can resize the frame to take up whatever amount of the
screen you desire. If you right click on any given search site,
you can, Open Frame in New Window, Back, Forward, Reload Frame,
Stop, View Frame Source, View Frame Info, Add Bookmark, and Send
Page.
This program is easy to install and automatically found my
browser. When you first run it, you are presented with the above
screen shot where you can choose your search engines, turn all
engines on or off, and even invert the current selections. A drop
down list is also available showing you past search topics which
you can modify for a new search or Ctrl-rightclick to clear the
stored search strings.
I was very pleased with my use of Solway's Internet Search. It
performed without any problems and I found it to have a number of
nice features. Most importantly, it has reduce my search time
dramatically and has made the information highway a much smoother
ride. I recommend this program to anyone who has experienced the
same type of frustration in finding whatever your looking for. I
would also suggest you visit Solway's web site and take a look at
his other Shareware and Freeware programs.
NOTE: As a Canadian of Scottish ancestry I must confess that I
get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I find a program that betters
my computing experience and also says FREE. What is that old
saying about being "tighter than bark to a tree":)
