I have played a lot of 2D Flight/Space Sim games on a variety of
platforms, including Dos, Windows 3.1, Sega, and Nintendo, but few of the come close in
the categories of detail, sound, graphics, or cost to Ultra Violent Worlds. This game
takes the cake as far as 2D games go. This game provides an excellent balance of detail
and complexity, with ease of play. There are several performance glitches that might make
you say "forget about it" after a while, including the tendency to freeze up
your computer and force you to use the dreaded ReSeT button. However, if you can get past
the bugs, and play the game for awhile, you will see how great the design of this game is.
Now, of course a 2D space sim is not exactly original, but if you have a great game, then
no one really cares about originality. Take the example of Doom, one of the first 3D
shooters. Now we have Hexen, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Strife, Descent, Area 51, and countless
other 3D shooters. Ultra Violent Worlds takes a not so original theme and creates a new
standard of 2D game play.
The game allows you to earn credits towards the purchase of other ships, weapons, and
other really cool items that will help you stand up against missiles and lasers, while
blowing the heck out of anything and everything that crosses your path. The sounds in this
game are the best I've seen on a 2D flight game, because unlike most others, it uses
digital sounds that are Sound Blaster compatible, and great digital (Not MIDI) music.
The only 2D flight game that really beats Ultra Violent Worlds in detail and game play is
Raptor: Call of the Shadows, which I consider the best of the best despite the age because
it uses actual a Fighter Plane, which is futuristic, but scientific also. I personally
recommend this game to anyone who has every played or wanted to play a 2D arcade/flight
game, because this game will change your whole attitude towards 2D arcade games.
