ichat's plugin for Netscape 3.x/4.x allows you to chat on the Internet
without having to wait for Java to load. ichat is reliable, free, and easy to use, but you
have to find a chat room that uses ichat, in order to use it. Yahoo, one of the largest
companies to use ichat, just gave it up and uses Java or HTML now.
If you can put up with Java, its probably your best bet, but I would keep ichat around
just in case you find a chat that requires it. Because of that I recommend it, but it will
never replace Java chats, ever.
