Late one night, while rooting around Windows Explorer, I noticed that all
of the usual icons for familiar files had, uh...... changed. The icons on my Desktop and
system tray had also transformed into unfamiliar little hallucinations. No it wasn't an
acid flashback... What I was seeing was, it turns out, a familiar enough spectacle, since
just as life can imitate art, Windows can imitate a Fellini movie.
At least where Windows' icon switcheroo is concerned, now there's Fresh Icons. It's an
icon repair tool that restores your Desktop and Explorer icons to their normal state, not
to mention restoring your confidence that you have NOT gone crazy. Fresh Icons sends icon
update request to Windows, and quits. That's it. But Fresh Icons works to restore things
when your right-click Refresh command from the Desktop doesn't. Just execute the program
each time things get weird.
Icon metamorphosis may not be one of the world's biggest problems, but hey, Little Wheezer
(my computer) gives me enough surprises. And Windows crams enough indignities down my
throat as it is. You gotta hold you ground where you can. Stand up for your icons, by
golly! Fresh Icons gives you some self-defense. It's a tiny program, just unzip, and click
the EXE to run it.
