For users of Internet Explorer 4+, InfoTip is a slick little shell extension that adds configurable file information, in thought-bubble style, to the standard IE tooltip displays you get when you rest the mouse over a Desktop icon. But it's even better than that. InfoTip provides information displays to any Desktop icon, not just My Computer or Recycle Bin. PLUS, InfoTip gives you extended tooltip-type displays for folders and files out of Windows Explorer and your QuickLaunch Bar too.

You can configure InfoTip's information display options via the File Properties dialog -- you'll notice a new "InfoTip" tab in the Properties window, just click and check every box you want. You can also add file extensions, and many other options, from Display Properties dialog.

This app is great for enhancing and customizing the IE4 tips displays --and into exactly the information you want about each file or folder. You can even read the first few paragraphs (subject to the InfoTips display size) of any text or HTML filename you rest the mouse over -- super for getting a quick peek inside, without launching an editor or advanced file viewer.

InfoTip comes with a installer/uninstaller, takes almost no space, no resources, and adds time-saving convenience if you want to clean your directories that have become bloated with Mystery Files. It's free, and the author encourages users to email with questions and comments. The author also permits this app to be reproduced and distributed, just email him with advance notice: Norio Nomura, at norio@na.rim.or.jp

For similar "tooltip" quick-viewing of Zip file content, the author has written a neat app called ZipTip (now available in alpha version), which is also reviewed here.
