protoPowers is a board game played on a grid 9X9, and it's played with 2 people, you against the computer, or on a network, LAN or internet. They take turns moving their rings and dohickeys. The object is to be the first to capture your opponents's golden rings.

All moves made during a game are recorded, and can be reviewed in the game history. There is a nifty toolbar, instead of having to click on file or edit or whatever. You can undo moves, save games, [although saved games can't be loaded as network games-but they are working on it] there is also go to beginning of game, new, options, and more. The options menu allows you to put in your name, it gives you a personal icon associated with your name, select your color, select the skill level of the computer player, change animations speed and more.

The main game board is in the center, their are side areas on the left, where you stash your loot, and on the right is the clock and the game history. The toolbar is on top. The clock shows how much time each takes for their turn, and the personal icon. Their is also a chat box so you can chat with your opponents.

White always goes first, and there are 3 parts to a move. The ring move, [which is optional] the figure move, and if there is a capture, loot distribution. Each figure can only move according to their power of its rings, and at this point I gotta tell you this is a complex, somewhat confusing, and intricate game. I also have to say that the directions appear to be confusing, but I'm still not sure if they really are or it's just the confusion of the game. Allow me to quote just one line from the moves allowed.

"Blue rings have a distance power. When by itself, however, the blue ring power lacks direction, so it collapses into a circle. A figure with only a blue ring can move to a field that is across one line and one corner in any direction."

I believe that this game can be learned, talk to me in....oh 6-8 months, and I'll let you know how I'm doing. I think I'm enjoying it, but I don't have the foggiest idea what I'm doing!
