If you want e-mail made easy then this is the program for you. PopAgent is both serious and fun. OK there's loads of really good e-mail notifiers on the market but good as they are they all seem a bit staid and lacking that little extra. Not PopAgent.

Sure it can be a basic notifier but it has three animated characters (two in the trial version) which can be activated or not according to your preference. These Characters Boxy, Postal Pete and Cabby will vocally notify you of incoming mail and read the headers to you and make various comments whilst showing an optional speech balloon.

The comments can be adjusted to varying degrees of niceness. A nice touch is the ability to add your own phrases, all done by keyboard no microphone needed. The voices are very good. I live in Wales and as a test I tried entering some Welsh place names in the subject box of test e-mails, things like Caerphilly, Nantymoel, Cwmbran etc, these guys are Welsh speakers!!! A special delivery button plays an animated short cartoon which changes every day, Great fun.

On the serious side this is a very good functional e-mail program. Set up is simple and e-mail accounts are installed via a wizard though you do need to know your incoming pop server address and your SMTP address, these are available from your ISP. It doesn't replace your default mail client but it does more than Outlook Express (which is mine). The function that does it for me is the ability to read the first 30 lines of your message and delete it from the server if you want to, all without going near Outlook. Great for getting shot of junk or unwanted mail before it reaches you. Auto checking of incoming mail is configurable for length of time between mail checking.

I found the Compose New Message facility useful, it saves time by not having to open your default e-mail client and PopAgent has its own address book. Messages can be sent as text or HTML. Other features include mark messages, mark and hide messages and a very useful filter facility for blocking unwanted attention. The message window can be set to pop up or not it's all down to your preference.

The shareware version is limited to 30 days and limited characters but at $15.00 it's a bargain.
