I am not quite sure where to begin reviewing this program other than to
say that I am MOST impressed!! Keeping this review down to 2 or 3 paragraphs is going to
be extremely difficult if not impossible. There is just too much to the program to be able
to say it all in just a few words.
Several weeks ago, I downloaded Multimedia Platypus from the website to review it. I felt
however, I could not do the software justice with the download I had available to me. I
wanted to know more about the features the program included and a more comprehensive
"help" file. I emailed the author and requested a copy of the trial CD which was
offered on the web site. Coming from Australia, it took a while but it was well worth the
wait.
To start, the CD includes an unbelievably detailed, animated and truly fascinating
multimedia tutorial. If shows every option MP offers, including samples of each. It even
offers you a chance to play some games and solve some puzzles created with the program.
The help file included on the CD is equal to none and 2 "lessons" are also
included. Some of the many features are interactive and non-interactive presentations, a
paint program, animation program and a text editor You can create newsletters, catalogs,
slide shows, albums, greeting cards, books, stories, cartoons, games, puzzles, etc., using
images, text, sounds and animations. MP includes a "twin browser," something I
have not seen before, allowing you to view two Internet pages at once. IE 4.0 is required
for this feature and is included on the CD in case you do not already have it on your
system. Projects may be created and reproduced for distribution. You also may modify your
projects while the application is running.
All in all, this is the most versatile and fascinating program I have found yet. I have
not really begun to touch the surface and nothing I find will surprise me. For a
multimedia program, I HIGHLY recommend Multimedia Platypus. Surprisingly, any Pentium
computer with as little as 16 MB of RAM will support the program. I saw today, 3/31/99,
that version 2.1 is now available but unfortunately I do not have any information as to
the differences between 2.0 and the newer version.
It is stated that MP is NOT for web design but I personally can think of MANY parts of
this program that may be used on a web page. The author underestimates the versatility of
his creation!!!! Most of the trial program is fully functional. You are, however, limited
to using a maximum of 6 objects in your project.
Again I say, give this little Australian gem a try for something truly unusual and easy to
use. You won't be sorry you did.
