pdfPLUS (formerly called JAMBuddy), a free plug-in suite for Adobe Acrobat
4 and Adobe Acrobat Reader, is a must-have for graphic designers, cartographers, and even
webmasters who can add new dimensions to their web pages via pdfPLUS' object search
capability. It's a perfect add-on to allow you to view and query PDF files that have data
embedded in them --such as maps, CAD, GIS, or PDF files you might view on the Internet.
And, it's now available for Mac as well as Windows 95/98/NT.
This special plug-in lets you read important database information embedded within a
special PDF file. Thus, a cartographer's MAPublisher creations, and the data attributes
within it, are completely accessible for use on an Intranet or the Internet. Just point
and click on anything in the PDF and discover the hidden information. Query your data and
watch pdfPLUS find the qualifiers.
No kidding, this thing is a blast! I got a PDF map of downtown Toronto while surfing the
Web,. Using the Query and Information functions (accessed via new buttons it installs onto
you reader's toolbar), I could pinpoint a map location and use Query to select my layer
& related data. Then the Information function brought up what I asked for -- in this
case, how many apartments, businesses, and homes were located on my target map area.
If you've created an image enriched with background data, you can use pdfPLUS to
incorporate it directly onto a web page. And as a web visitor, pdfPLUS' Query and
Information functions enable you to collect the data you want -- such as I did in the
example I gave above -- while remaining in the graphic. The object search capability of
pdfPLUS gives you a simple, quick way to cut through the Internet clutter you can
typically expect with text searches.
It is required you have the Adobe Acrobat version 4.0 Reader installed --it can also be
downloaded (5.3M file size) from the pdfPLUS download page. The pdfPLUS installer includes
release notes readme, draft User Guide, a sample pdfPLUS file and updated pdfPLUS
exporters for Adobe Illustrator 7 and Macromedia FreeHand 8. MAPublisher is required to
use these exporters to create pdfPLUS documents. A demo copy of MAPublisher for Adobe
Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand for is also available for download, as well as many
additional sample PDF files for you to view.
