Download/HomepageXenu's Link Sleuth is a spidering program that checks Web sites for broken
links. It checks normal, image, frame, background, local image map, style sheet, script
and applet links. It also supports SSL websites ("https://") and does partial
testing of ftp and gopher sites. Other features include detection and report of redirected
URLs, an easy to use interface, the ability to re-check broken links, the ability to
squirrel down to 999 levels, the ability to check up to 100 links at the same time, and
more. Another great feature is the ability to save a partially checked page and start
checking where you stopped. The report makes it easy to see the good links, which are
displayed in green, and the broken links, which are displayed in red along with the reason
why it is "broken". Clicking on a link will load it in your web browser. When it
is done checking it will generate a htm file.
Customizing Xenu's Link Sleuth is easy to do just click on the Options menu and click
Preferences. The options (preferences) window lets you choose Parallel Threads (the number
of links you want it to check simultaneously 30 is the default), Maximum level (how many
pages deep you want to check), Ask for password on restricted sites, Apply to all jobs,
and Report preferences. The Report preferences are Broken links (order by links), Broken
links (ordered by page), Redirected URLs, Ftp and gopher URLs, Valid text URLs, and Site
Map. Just make your changes and click ok.
Xenu's Link Sleuth is really easy to use just click on the Check URL button then enter in
the url you want to start at and choose to check external links or not and click ok. You
can also click browse to check your local files. The check is done quickly showing you the
progress while it is checking and asking you if you want to see the report when it is
done. This program does not check mailto links but it will display them in the progress
window in orange so you can verify that they are typed correctly. All in all this is
really a great program and definitely a must have if you have a web site. What makes this
program even greater is that it is FREE and SMALL.
